You can take a lesson from the experts at Kahalu'u Bay Surf and Sea , located right at the beach. They're a lot of fun and there's usually a photographer on the beach that will record your adventure for you.
If you want bigger surf, the outside break is where you want to be. As always, be safe and listen to the locals.
Kahalu'u beach has many turtles that feed in the shallows around the bay. Check out the south part of the bay where they congregate.
Because it's shallow and protected, Kahalu'u snorkeling is excellent. Clear, clean water makes for superb visibility.

Get away from the crowds and go all the way out to the breakwater. You'll see bigger fish and more species. The south end of the beach is a hangout for turtles. You can almost always see them feeding in the shallows there.

Swim in one of the largest condo resort complex pools on the Big Island. It's always sparkling clean and a perfect swimming temperature.
It's big enough to do laps without having to navigate around other swimmers and because of the modest number of guests in the complex, you'll never face a crowd.
For times when you have a group you can reserve the common area gazebo next to the pool.
